 IN SUPERNATURAL
Castiel (played by Misha Collins) first appears in episode 4.01 "Lazarus Rising", as the "Angel of the Lord" who pulls Dean from Hell. He tries to communicate with him twice after his resurrection, but fails to do so after incorrectly assuming Dean is capable of withstanding the power of his voice. He later meets with Dean within the body of a human host, and tells him that he had raised him because God has work for him to do. Dean is skeptical, but both Bobby and Sam believe the claim to be true, as there is no other being that they can find or know of that is capable of pulling a soul out of Hell and that is also immune to all the known methods of killing supernatural creatures.
In episode 4.02, Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester, Castiel appears to Dean again, congratulating him for dealing with the Witnesses. However, Dean is angry with him for knowing about the event but not assisting them. Castiel explains that he was busy on other battlefields, and tells Dean of the importance of the Witnesses and how they are just one of 66 seals. Upon more questioning, the angel reveals that Lilith is breaking the seals in order to free Lucifer, an event they are trying to stop at all costs. After some more condescending remarks from him, Castiel tells Dean that "six of his brothers" had died that week, and if Dean didn't want to be sent back to Hell, he had better show some respect.
Castiel later sends Dean back through time in episode 4.03, "In the Beginning", to when Azazel had made a pact with Mary Winchester to show Dean all that they know of the demon's plan. However, he admits that they are unaware of the main goal that he had for his psychic children. When Castiel returns Dean to the present, he tells him that they are unsure of Sam's part in Azazel's plan and that Sam is headed down a dangerous road. Pointing out that Sam, who had left in the night to go with Ruby, is not in the hotel room, Castiel tells Dean of his brother's location and gives an ultimatum: either stop Sam, or the angels will.
In episode 4.07 "It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester", Castiel meets Sam in person for the first time. Although Sam is humbled and awed by his presence, the angel is initially hesitant to even shake Sam's hand (although eventually does so) but proceeds to shatter many of Sam's illusions about angels by referring to him as "the boy with the demon blood". He then begins to speak with Dean about the witch the brothers were hunting, warning them that she sought to break one of the 66 seals. He reveals that they cannot allow another seal to be lost, having brought a "specialist" angel, Uriel, to smite the entire town in an effort to destroy the witch. Both Sam and Dean are understandably upset that they would consider such a method, and Dean eventually manages to convince them otherwise by refusing to leave the town. Being important to heaven, and seemingly God, the angels wouldn't dare kill him. Castiel, having appeared already reluctant to carry out his supposed orders, allows Dean to do as he wishes. In a later conversation with Uriel, he chastises his partner for insulting humanity by referring to them as "mud monkeys", and tells him that they must continue following their "true orders." After the Winchester brothers manage to vanquish the demon Samhain, Castiel pays Dean another visit, revealing to him that their real orders were to follow his orders. He then tells Dean that he finds humans to be "works of art," being creations of his Father, and that he was praying that he would choose to save the town. He then confesses, in confidence, that he sometimes has doubts about distinguishing what is truly right and what is truly wrong any more. He leaves Dean with a warning that Hell would be brought to earth if they failed, and that he doesn't envy Dean the weight on the his shoulders.
In episode 4.09 "I Know What You Did Last Summer", Castiel returns with Uriel seeking Anna Milton, a girl with a special ability to "hear" all the communications between the angels. They plan to kill the girl, though for reasons beyond the brothers' initial understanding. It is later revealed in Heaven and Hell that Anna was once an angel, and that she outranked Castiel much in the same way he is above Uriel. Thus, not only could she be interrogated by Hell for what she can hear, but also of what she already knows of Heaven. Though the group managed to escape him and Uriel, the two angels eventually track them down with information from a reluctant Dean. They had threatened to send him back to Hell, and although he still resisted, he eventually relented when they threatened to kill Sam as well. Castiel chose not to deliver this message, as according to Uriel, he liked Dean too much.
Once there, Castiel expresses regret at having to kill Anna. She coolly replies to him that he couldn't feel the full scope of that emotion. Before they can carry out their plan, however, they are confronted by Alistair and two of his demon minions. A fight ensues, and Castiel attempts to destroy Alistair while Uriel deals with the others. Unfortunately, Alistair proves far stronger than he imagined, and not only rebuffs the angel's attempts, but easily knocks him down with a single strike. The demon then begins to chant a spell of an unknown purpose, which seems to be potent enough to strike fear in Castiel. He is saved by Dean, and then all of them are rescued when Anna regains her grace and, with it, her angelic powers. Although Uriel nearly vents his frustration on Dean, Castiel stops him, and the two leave peacefully.
 POWERS AND TRAITS
As an Angel of God, Castiel is an extremely powerful being. Merely perceiving his actual form typically results in blindness, as the appearance of his natural "visage" is so overwhelming that it is capable of burning a individual's eyes from their sockets, including those possessed by a demon. However, according to Castiel himself, certain "special people" are able to tolerate his true appearance and voice. He initially believed Dean to be one of these special individuals, yet his ignorance led only to two failed attempts to contact Dean. Apparently, one can protect themselves from such personal damage by shielding their eyes, and perhaps their ears, from the presence of a Angel, as demonstrated by Sam and Dean in "Heaven and Hell".
Castiel possesses astounding power, though his abilities are apparently not completely limitless. He is apparently immortal and invulnerable to mortal harm. At the end of "Lazaras Rising", he absorbed several shotgun blasts directly to the chest of his host, which did not so much as faze him. He is capable of possessing a Human and fully utilizing their body, yet he claims that his host is, or possibly was, a "devout man who prayed for it". This possibly indicates that Castiel is adverse to possessing a sentient being, and would not had done so if the man had not prayed for it, though he has not appeared to be particularly fazed by this. Castiel typically displays very little emotion and always exhibits an extremely somber disposition. He has not been observed to smile or express any strong emotions. According to the fallen Angel Anna, Angels possibly do not possess the ability to truly feel emotion. However, Castiel frequently exhibits what could be referred to as friendly affection towards Dean, and seems to at the very least come close to expressing regret, hesitance, and anger several times.
Castiel also possesses the ability to seemingly vanish and materialize from thin air. How he accomplishes this has not been elaborated on, yet as he is an Angel and possesses wings, he could possibly be flying from one place to another, only moving so fast as to become unperceivable. Another possibility is that he possesses an ability to teleport, though flying seems to be more likely, as both he and his partner have been observed suddenly appearing at a location accompanied by the sound of flapping wings and a sudden rush of air. Though he typically seems to attempt to avoid fighting, he is a very formidable opponent when need be, and is apparently practically unstoppable when facing mortal beings. As Uriel exhibited superhuman strength when battling two demons in the episode "Heaven and Hell", Castiel most likely possesses such physical power as well. He possesses the ability to kill or exorcise a demon simply by touching his palm to the forehead of it's host, yet the demon Alastair proved to possess complete immunity from such an attack. Castiel usually deals with trobelsome Humans by touching his finger to their foreheads, which apparently results in instant unconciousness. He is also fully immune to every defense used against demons and other supernatual entities, such as salt barriers and Ruby's Dagger.
Castiel also possesses the ability to bend time and teleport himself and another backwards through time. Perhaps Castiel's most impressive ability observed to date was his removal of Dean's soul from Hell and the apparent resurrection of Dean that followed. Apparently, Castiel is not only capable of entering and exiting Hell at will and without harm, but also of extracting a particular soul in the process. Castiel also appears to be capable of projecting at least a portion of his true self from his host, as at the end of "Lazarus Rising", he was able to display the shadows of his wings to Dean as proof that he was in fact what he claimed. Despite his vast power and knowledge, however, Castiel is not completely immune to harm. He can apparently be hurt and killed by powerful demons. Also, in the episode "Are you there God? It's me, Dean Winchester", he claims to Dean that six of his "brothers" were recently killed in battle, indicating that Castiel himself and Angels in general are not fully immune to death and harm.
LAZARUS RISING
Four months after being dragged to Hell by Lilith's minions, Dean inexplicably wakes up, buried underground in a coffin. He escapes his underground confinement and tries to contact Bobby, when he's suddenly ambushed by an unknown entity. He is reunited with Sam, who is just as surprised at Dean's resurrection as he himself. Together with Bobby, the Winchester brothers find a psychic, Pamela Barnes, to help them discover what pulled Dean out of Hell. Pamela does find out the name of the being, Castiel, but at a horrible price—the sight of Castiel burns her eyes out. It is also revealed that Sam's psychic abilities have advanced greatly as he now is able to exorcise demons. He also seems to be frequently meeting with Ruby, who has possessed a new host. Sick of being toyed with, Dean decides to summon the thing together with Bobby in order to find out what it wants and prepares a ritual. The ritual succeeds and Castiel appears, an angel of the Lord. He explains that he is responsible for dragging Dean out of Hell and, when Dean asks why he of all people would be worthy of being saved, that God has work for him to do.
ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT'S ME, DEAN WINCHESTER
Bobby asks the Winchester boys for help when fellow hunters of his are being killed off one by one in a most gruesome way. Sam is haunted by FBI Agent Henrickson who died in the explosion caused by Lilith, accusing Sam of failing him. Together with Bobby they find out that they're being haunted by the spirits of the people they couldn't save, which is called "The Rising of the Witnesses", a sign of the upcoming Apocalypse. Meg Masters (Nicki Aycox) and two twin girls also appear and haunt Dean, Sam and Bobby, who perform a ritual to ward off the angry spirits. Later, Castiel appears to Dean in a dream and reveals that "The Rising of the Witnesses" is one of many seals, which are being broken by demons in order to bring on the Apocalypse, in which Lucifer will walk the earth.
IN THE BEGINING
Dean is transported back in time to the '70s in Lawrence, Kansas. There, he meets a younger John Winchester (Matt Cohen) and Mary (Amy Gumenick). This family reunion gets bigger when the Dean meets their Grandfather (Mitch Pileggi), who could have a huge secret.
 METAMORPHOSIS
After watching Sam harness his powers, Dean angrily confronts him. Distance and tension is put between the two brothers as Dean realizes his younger brother is manifesting the demonic blood inside him with Ruby's help, and lying to him about it. Meanwhile, a hunter asks Sam and Dean for help in a case involving a man who is going through a metamorphosis into a monstrous creature that consumes human flesh.
 MONSTER MOVIE
The Winchester Brothers find themselves at a local Oktoberfest celebration investigating a series of suspicious murders being perpetrated by what locals are describing as monsters from classic 1930's horror movies. They soon discover this is the work of yet another Shapeshifter (portrayed by Todd Stashwick).
 YELLOW FEVER
The boys are lured into a town where a man died of a heart attack, but with none of the usual symptoms. The man died of a ghost sickness which is passed onto Dean. The illness causes a person to experience general anxiety, which progresses into deadly fear. Sam and Bobby must find a way to save Dean before his heart stops. The original title for this episode was 'Phobia'. Also, before the credits, there is a special surprise for the fans: an outtake of Jensen Ackles improvisationally air guitaring his way through 'Eye of the Tiger'.
IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, SAM WINCHESTER
It's a few days before Halloween and Sam and Dean investigate two mysterious deaths in a small town. The brothers find hex bags and deduce a witch is sacrificing people to summon a dangerous demon named Samhain. Castiel arrives in town and tells Sam and Dean the freeing of Samhain is one of the seals that will lead to freeing Lucifer. Castiel brings a specialist angel named Uriel to smite the entire town.
 WISHFUL THINKING
Sam and Dean investigate a small town where the wishing well really works. A teddy bear comes to life, someone wins the lottery and the town geek gets a hot girlfriend. The brothers realize that while everyone is happy now, the end result will be disastrous.
I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER
Ruby heard some demons whisper about a girl in the psychiatric hospital who suddenly became a target for demons, and points Sam and Dean in the direction to protect Anna Milton before Hell gets their hooks into her. After a close encounter with a dangerous demon powerhouse, Alastair, whom Dean remembers from Hell, Sam reveals what happened to him in the months without Dean. Castiel and Uriel appear and the Winchesters realize it has become a fight between Heaven and Hell for the girl. (Part 1 of 2)
 HEAVEN AND HELL
Dean and Sam figure out why Castiel and his superior/handler, Uriel, the Archangel of Purity, want Anna Milton dead when the three of them are forced to go on the run, not only from heavenly and vengeful angels, but from Alastair and his demon minions who also try to track down Sam, Dean and Anna. (Part 2 of 2)
 FAMILY REMAINS
Sam and Dean investigate a suspected haunted house with a murderous spirit inside the walls. Complications ensue when a family of five moves in, and the "spirit" turns out to be two very non-supernatural, feral children who are the product of incest and years of abuse, and who are willing to kill to protect their home.
 CRISS ANGEL IS A DOUCHEBAG
Sam and Dean attend a magician's convention where it seems that real magic is being performed. However, while performing magic, a magician performs execution on himself, but he did not get killed whereas a man dies after being impaled by the spikes in his stage. Has someone turned to the dark arts to revive their failing career? Also, Ruby visits Sam with a proposition.
 AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL
Sam and Dean discover that a spirit is haunting one of their old high schools. While investigating the haunting Dean and Sam relive their high school experiences through flashbacks. The spirits are actually nerds who are tormented by jocks, so they want revenge on them.
 SEX AND VIOLANCE
The brothers investigate murders committed by men under the spell of a siren, and meet a doctor who takes a liking to Sam. They also meet a detective who first questions Sam and Dean, and then helps them. Then the brothers fall under the spell themselves.
 DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY
The brothers investigate a town where no one dies because the Reapers are being trapped. With no one left to guide the souls to the afterlife, people survive fatal gunshots, stabbing wounds, etc. Sam and Dean learn that Alastair plans to break one of the 66 seals by killing Reapers and seek the help of psychic Pamela to stop his malicious plan. But things go wrong when Pamela gets hurt.
ON THE HEAD OF A PIN
Castiel and Uriel have captured Alastair and ask Dean to use the torturing skills he learned in Hell to extract information from him so they can stop whomever is killing angels. Sam is concerned Dean can’t handle the job but Dean agrees to do it. However, when Alastair reveals some shocking information, Dean’s world is shattered. Sam ends up getting Alastair to reveal the demon who is murdering the angels by using his powers. Also, new information is revealed about the angels.
 IT'S A TERRIBLE LIFE
Dean has gone missing and finds himself in an alternate reality in which he is a Wall Street Tycoon surrounded by a haunting that is forcing his co-workers to kill themselves.
THE MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK
Lilith possesses the body of a dental hygienist and returns to wreak havoc and trouble on the Winchesters. Sam and Dean also discover a book entitled Supernatural about two demon hunting brothers named Sam and Dean Winchester while investigating a possible haunting at a comic book shop - the shop clerk believes the boys are LARPing the book when they visit. The author of the book turns out to be a prophet.
 JUMP THE SHARK
A 19-year-old boy named Adam calls Sam and Dean looking for John Winchester, claiming to be his son. Dean and Sam meet Adam, assuming he's a demon trying to lure then into a trap. However, they find out that John was indeed the boy's father and Adam tells them of his "normal" upbringing, which infuriates Dean.
 THE RAPTURE
Castiel appears to Dean in a dream and says he has something important to tell him but they need to meet somewhere private. Dean and Sam go searching for Castiel but instead find Jimmy, Castiel’s human vessel, who has only a spotty recollection of being an angel. Jimmy wants to return to his family and normal life, but Dean and Sam are concerned about his safety.
 WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS
Dean and Bobby lock Sam in Bobby’s panic room so he can detox from the demon blood. However, as Bobby sees more seals are being broken he tells Dean they should let Sam out to help them fight the impending Apocalypse. Dean disagrees and goes to Castiel for help. Sam and Dean have a big blowout confrontation.
 LUCIFER RISING
After leaving Dean, Sam joins Ruby on a final run to kill Lilith. They kidnap Lilith's personal chef who disguises itself as a nurse, stealing newborn babies for Lilith to devour, to question her. Meanwhile, Dean is kidnapped by the angels and brought to a room without any exit where Zachariah explains to him that the angels are not trying to stop the final seal from being broken—in fact, they want to start the Apocalypse, for it will cleanse the earth and bring Paradise. So Dean's task is not stopping the Apocalypse from starting, but ending it once it has. Dean is furious at Castiel for deceiving him, and Castiel reluctantly reveals that Lilith's death will break the final seal and sends Dean to St. Mary's Convent where Sam is just using his powers to kill Lilith. Ruby sees Dean approaching and closes the door telepathically so Dean can't stop Sam. After Sam has killed Lilith, her blood forms some sort of portal on the ground while Ruby reveals that she has been working for Lucifer the entire time, and the only demon who knew of her true allegiance was Lilith. She manipulated Sam into killing Lilith because she knew that Lilith was the final seal. Sam is devastated when he realizes what he has done. Suddenly, Dean smashes the door and stabs Ruby with her own knife, killing her for good, as the door to Lucifer's prison begins to open.
At the end of the third season of Supernatural, main character Dean Winchester is in Hell after being killed by the hellhounds of the demonic antagonist Lilith. In the season four premiere "Lazarus Rising", the angel Castiel is introduced. He has brought Dean back from Hell, resurrecting him. Because merely perceiving his actual form typically results in blindness, he takes a human host–James "Jimmy" Novak, a "devout man" who prayed for it–to communicate with Dean, and tells him that he has been brought back because God has work for him. Lilith is breaking the 66 seals in order to free Lucifer, and Dean must stop her.
In the episode "It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester", Castiel and the angel Uriel are prepared to destroy a town to prevent witches there from breaking another seal. Castiel later tells Dean that he finds humans to be "works of art", being creations of his Father, and that he was praying that Dean would choose to save the town even if it meant losing another seal. He confesses, in confidence, that he sometimes has doubt about distinguishing what is truly right and what is truly wrong any more.

Castiel returns with Uriel at the end of the episode "I Know What You Did Last Summer", seeking to kill Anna Milton, a fallen angel with the ability to "hear" the communications between angels. In the following episode, "Heaven and Hell", Anna uses a spell to send the angels away, though they manage to track them down later, having threatened Dean with Sam's life. Castiel chose not to deliver this message, as according to Uriel, he liked Dean too much. Once there, Castiel expresses regret at having to kill Anna. Before they can carry out their duty, however, they are confronted by the demon Alastair and two of his minions. A fight ensues, and Castiel is nearly defeated in the battle by Alastair. He is saved by Dean, and they in turn are rescued when Anna regains her powers. Although Uriel nearly vents his frustration on Dean, Castiel stops him, and the two leave.

Castiel later becomes suspicious of Uriel and confronts him. Uriel admits that he and certain other angels are now working together to free Lucifer, having grown weary of never hearing from God and jealous of His favoritism for humanity. He asks Castiel to join him, but Castiel refuses and attacks him. Uriel eventually overpowers Castiel, but is killed by Anna before he can strike the finishing blow.

In "The Rapture", Castiel enters Dean's dreams and arranges a meeting to tell him something important. However, when Sam and Dean go to meet him, they instead find Jimmy, Castiel's host, who claims to have little memory of his life as a vessel. Anna theorizes that Castiel must have angered his superiors, prompting him to be taken back to Heaven. When Jimmy is shot at the end of the episode trying to save his family from demons, Castiel returns, taking Jimmy's daughter as his new vessel. After the demons are killed, a dying Jimmy begs Castiel to take him back as a host so that his daughter will not have to go through what he did, and the angel acquiesces. Dean then asks him what he needed to tell him, but Castiel coldly replies that his loyalty is to Heaven, not to mankind or to him. In "When the Levee Breaks", Castiel has Dean take the oath of allegiance to God and His angels, to which Dean agrees under the impression that it will keep Sam safe. Later in the episode, Castiel releases Sam, who is on detox from Ruby's demon blood, from Bobby's demon bunker. When Anna confronts him about his actions, other angels appear and capture her.

With Sam closing in on Lilith, Castiel and Zachariah imprison Dean within an idyllic waiting room, where he will be made comfortable until the time comes for him to play his role in stopping the Apocalypse. Dean refuses to remain idle, and continually requests to be able to be see Sam, which is denied. Once Dean discovers that the angels are allowing the Apocalypse to happen, he implores for Castiel to help him stop the final seal from being broken. Though Castiel refuses at first, he returns ready to help not long after. He takes Dean to see Chuck for information on Sam. Their presence does not fall in line with Chuck's Gospel, so the Archangel Raphael begins to descend. Castiel sends Dean to Sam, remaining behind to hold back the Archangel and any others that might come. He is subsequently killed, with his host's body being blown to pieces.

However, Castiel later returns—still in Jimmy Novak's body—in the fifth season premiere, "Sympathy for the Devil", killing two fellow angels in order to save Sam and Dean. He is uncertain as to how he was resurrected, but alludes to Zachariah that it may have been God's doing. After ordering Zachariah away, Castiel carves mystical symbols, Enochian sigils, into Sam and Dean's ribs to hide them from all angels, including Lucifer. Castiel later returns to the brothers in "Good God Y'All!", and reveals that he plans to find God. He borrows Dean's amulet, as it burns hot in God's presence, and departs.

In "Abandon All Hope...", Castiel helps the Winchesters retrieve the Colt, and joins them on their hunt for Lucifer. However, he ventures off after discovering that hundreds of Reapers are already in the town, hoping to discover what has called them there. He soon becomes imprisoned by Lucifer, who tries to tempt Castiel into joining him, pointing out that they are both targets of Heaven, but Castiel refuses. He later manages to free himself, but finds that he no longer has the power to kill demons. After Sam and Dean fail in their attempt to kill the Devil, Castiel teleports them to safety.

When Sam and Dean are killed by vengeful hunters in "Dark Side of the Moon", Castiel—unable to return to Heaven—briefly communicates with the brothers. He tasks them with finding the Angel Joshua, who communicates directly to God. Although Joshua reveals that God is alive, he claims that He is apathetic to the Apocalypse; having saved the brothers and Castiel, God feels that He has done enough. When relayed to Castiel, his hopes and faith are shattered, leading him to drink heavily in the subsequent episode "99 Problems".

In "Point of No Return," Castiel helps Sam to keep Dean from becoming Michael's vessel. He leaves after hearing a signal from the angels, and finds a resurrected Adam Milligan—Sam and Dean's half-brother who had been previously killed by ghouls. When Dean escapes and tries to contact the angels, Castiel finds him, and angrily attacks him for making Castiel's rebelling against heaven worthless. Later, he carves a banishing sigil into his own chest and activates in the presence of multiple angels in order to clear the way for Sam and Dean to attack Zachariah and save Adam. The effects of the sigil send him onto a fishing boat, now completely human. Despite his lack of power, he is able to defeat the Horseman Pestilence, and assists Bobby and Sam in preventing nationwide distribution of the Croatoan virus.

Lucifer kills Castiel in the fifth season finale, "Swan Song", for interfering in his destined confrontation with the Archangel Michael. After Sam and Dean manage to prevent the Apocalypse, however, God resurrects Castiel as an angel once more, implied to be stronger then ever. Believing Heaven to be in disarray now with Michael gone, he decides to return there to restore order.
